I first learned about a rain shadow from a podcast called Completely Arbortrary by Casey Clapp and Alex Cowson. It’s a great podcast if you are interested!
The rain shadow happens when moisture in the air is pushed up a mountain on one side by the warm air. This causes the moisture to cool, creating clouds and dropping all the moisture as rain or snow. As the warm air moves over the mountain there is no moisture. One side of the mountain is cool and wet from all the moisture. But the other side is hot and dry – the rain shadow.
